A Picture of me

Niall J Miller

Astronomer

I am an astronomer working in galactic astronomy. I develop techniques to more robustly and completely study variable stars.

Bio

My research revolves around stars whose brightness varies as a function of time. I have a particular interest in periodic variable stars and others within stellar and galactic astronomy (such as YSOs and galactic structure). I have developed techniques to more robustly and completely identify periodic variable stars. From this I have created "PRIMVS", the largest most complete catalogue of IR periodic variable stars. I have also worked with improving Gaia parallax and other small AI based things. I completed my undergraduate and masters studies at the University of Kent with a year at Indiana University. I recieved my PhD from the University of Hertfordshire in 2024 (Exploring the Infrared Variable Sky with Machine Learning). I am now a Postdoctoral Associate in Prof. Meridith Joyce's lab at the University of Wyoming - arguably one of the prettiest locations of a university.

In my free time I like to make things. Sometimes those things are guitars, mini-fridges or albums. I am the producer for and other half of "Hyperfine" the electronic(?) band(?). I was voted producer of the week by `BBC Introducing' for our song "Can you please stop asking?" which is sometimes found in the background of twitch streamers and mid-tier commentary youtube vidoes.
